Tories admit Banbury is no longer a 'safe seat'

David Rundle, LibDem hopeful for the Parliamentary seat of Banbury, has welcomed the admission by the Conservatives that the constituency can no longer be considered a 'safe seat' for them.

According to the BBC, the most recent MP for the area has accepted that he faces a 'tough challenge'.

David commented: 'It's one of the curiosities -- some would say injustices -- of our present system that at any election there are so many 'safe seats' where the likelihood of change is minimal. It's a system that has disenfranchised all those who want to vote for change.

'In this area, one party -- the Conservatives -- have held the seat for nearly a hundred years, a one man for over quarter of a century.

'But what the last few weeks have told us is that the old rules no longer apply. We have seen a LibDem surge across the country and Banbury is no exception. For too long the Tories have taken this constituency and its voters for granted. At last they have woken up to our challenge.

'What I'm hearing on the doorstep is that people want change in government but don't think the Tories will provide anything much different. They are turning to us in the LibDems as the powerhouse for real and radical change.'
