Quotes of the Week

"Cyril Smith was a larger-than-life character and one of the most recognisable and likeable politicians of his day. He was a true Liberal, dedicated to his constituency, always showing great passion and determination. Rochdale and Britain have sadly lost one of their great MPs, and I think we can safely say there will never be an MP quite like Cyril Smith again."

Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats

Commenting on the death of Sir Cyril Smith, for 20 years Liberal (then Liberal Democrat) MP for Rochdale, who has passed away - 3 September

"Tackling the deficit is our immediate priority. But is it not our be-all and end-all. This Government is about much more than cuts. This Government is committed to the long term - to making decisions today that will promote a better future: a more prosperous economy, and a fairer society. Our determination to fix the deficit is matched by our determination to create a more socially mobile society. "
